ONE BLUE NORTH ROUND FOUR REVIEW

The first half of the weekend's double header resulted in Midland-Morrison shooting to the top of First Division Blue North. Their win over Safety Bay was impressive, as were the performances of Yokine over Sorrento and Bayswater against North Beach.

Stirling had a comfortable margin over a gallant Hollywood-Subiaco, and Bedford were too good for Warwick.

Watch this space for the results of Sunday's games in One Blue North.

Natalotto(sk.), Southern, Hutchinson,Crawford...23
Scott(sk.), Read, Smith, Taylor..............................15

Midland-Morrison recorded another excellent win with an emphatic forty eight shot margin over Safety Bay on Saturday. With the irrepressable Aaron Staples leading the way in a stunning thirty one to four win over the John Mulhall rink, the home side were always in control.

Some of the shots played by Staples and his team of John Snell, “Chippy” Normandale, and Dave Sutcliffe were top drawer material, shutting their opponents out of the game from go to whoa, while the other three Midland skippers, who are shaping up as a formidable foursome, came home with the bacon to send their club to the top of the ladder.

After a slow start to the pennants season, Ben Marino is finding some good form, while Tony Nattalotto, ably backed up by Alan Southern, “Raf” Hutchinson(who was a standout performer), and Daniel Crawford recorded an important eight shot win over the in form Graeme Scott, despite a good display by Scott's second, Neil Smith.

BEDFORD 90(7) d WARWICK 61(1)

Packer(sk.), Burke, Mayer, Carlsen..................17

Radford(sk.), Fullagar, Beaman, Colley..........26
Post(sk.), Martin, Dowson, Gregory................10

After a disappointing display at Safety Bay, Bedford were determined to take the points this week, although early indications were that things weren't going to be easy, with three Warwick rinks gaining initial ascendancy.

Baden Radford's side of Bruce Fullagar, the part time pennant player Ross Beaman, who bowled particularly well, and an outstanding Vaughn Colley leading in top form, were setting the pace for the home side, and continued in the same vein throughout, to lay the foundation for an aggregate win with a sixteen point margin.

The remaining three rinks were engrossing tussles all day, with Paul Hunter eventually gaining the upper hand over Brian Freind, who, with some telling counters from Tom Gates's impressive-looking set of bowls, which were drawing on a threepenny bit, looked the goods early. The Bedford father and son rink finally won the war of attrition to record what was at the finish a comparatively comfortable win.

John Winship and Peter Healy have every reason to smile after both were in a winning rink

John Winship and Peter Healy
John Groves produced the goods in an impressive debut with Cliff Graybrook's side's hardfought four shot win over the Paul Gertz rink, for whom Les Bates was a top performer.

It was a dour struggle between the young up and comer and the old master when Aaron Packer came face to face with John Mather.

In an enticing game to watch, Mather showed that his little running shots are still up there with the best, while the seventeen year old Packer displayed maturity beyond his years with his handling of the skipper's position. In a game highlighted by it's sheer competitiveness, Mather continued his winning form to grab a two shot win.

STIRLING 91(6) d HOLLYWOOD-SUBIACO 59(2)

Poggi(sk.), Marinovich, Babich, Astone..............28
Campbell(sk.), Morey, Mazzofanti, I.Edgar...........7

Erceg(sk.), Buktenica, Princi, Ursich...............20
Jones(sk.), Hamilton, Hall, Middleton............22

Radomiljac(sk.), Losinjanin, Katich, Sarich........26
Saunders(sk.), Arrowsmith, D.Edgar, Lindsay.....13

Fiamengo(sk.),Martinovich, Radalj, Iljich...........15
Byrne(sk.), Sterpini, Appleton, Blythe..................17

Stirling bounced back after last week's debacle at North Beach against a determined Hollywood-Subiaco, who fought hard to salvage two points on the fast carpet.

An outstanding debut for Stirling in First Division Blue by Ben Poggi, who, with Peter Marinovich, Nick Babich and John Astone scored a twenty one shot victory over Rob Campbell's side, paved the way for a home win, but the determined attitude that the Jones and Byrne rinks displayed in their gruelling wins, both by two shots, were encouraging signs for the embattled Hollywood-Subiaco.

With scores level on the last end, Byrne's side rallied well to take the winning counters on end twenty one.

Thirty shot losers last week, Ante Radomaljic returned to the winners list with a thirteen shot win over Martin Saunders. With Tony Losinjanin into the side as third this week, and Ivan Katich and Ray Sarich all in good touch, the improved form was duly noted by the stewards.

YOKINE 75(6) d SORRENTO 71(2)

Cooper(sk.), Gallop, Piercey, Griffiths............14
Brown(sk.), Cramond, Bone, Murray................21

Fulcher(sk.), Taylor, McEwen, West................16
Kuziela(sk.), Linford, Martin, Hutchinson......23

J.Hammond(sk.), Collins, Lucas, Heard...........15

Kay(sk.),Donovan, E.Hammond,Tolotti............26
Anderson(sk.),Rogers, Olive,Welch...................12

Chris Busing was the hero for Yokine in a last gasp win for the Doggies.

The solo game on the green, in a scenario reminiscent of the last home game against Safety Bay, it was a seesawing last end, with both skips having their chances to seal the issue, but, with the Swans holding the numbers to win, it was Busing who cut the deficit down by enough to take the aggregate.

When Ron Kuziela had Terry Fulcher fifteen to one after seven it was looking ominous early for the Doggies. Third Ian Linford started like a German band for the Swans, and good support was forthcoming from the leader, Rick Hutchinson.

Tony Kay, with his side contributing evenly, maintained the equalibrium, however, with a similar scoreline over Allan Anderson's rink and the battle for aggregate points came down to the Ian Cooper/ John Brown and Chris Busing/ John Hammond clashes.

Brown was in excellent form against Ian Cooper, displaying some wonderful draw shots. Despite the excellent leading from Yokine's Phil Griffiths, Brown, with Phil Cramond, Richard Bone, and Geoff Murray, took the honours. There were some anxious moments for the Doggies when Cooper's rink dropped a five and a four on the fifteenth and sixteenth ends, but Yokine scraped home with the points.

BAYSWATER 90(7) d NORTH BEACH 71(1)

Simonetti(sk.), Bearman, Sykes, Johnson.........30
Coles(sk.), Devenish, Stribling, I.Crosthwaite....18

Falconer(sk.), M.Ryan, Edwards, Davies..........19
Vitale(sk.), G.Crosthwaite, Bartle, Gregson......21

Gray(sk.), Kelly, Swalski, Beaglehole.................20
Hill(sk.), Dempsey, Gmeiner, Jones....................13

Cox(sk.), Walmsley, Sinatra, N.Ryan..................21
Schrauf(sk.), Potter, Retallack, Flegg.................19

Bayswater jumped off the canvas with a seven pointer over last week's runaway winner, North Beach, a few changes in personnel and team placings having the required results.

With Bearman promoted to third, in place of Kevin Beaglehole, Phil Simonetti's rink skipped out to an early lead over John Coles, and set the agenda for a Wolves win. Beaglehole, changed to a leading role in Gordon Gray's side, starred, and with Stan Kelly and Ziggy Swalski won a tight encounter with Gary Hill's side, for whom Mal Dempsey continued his outstanding form.

Mike Vitale won a hard fought game against the Falconer rink with a three on the last end, to gain the Blue's solitary point, while an engrossing battle between Bayswater's John Cox  and North Beach's Alan Schrauf went down to the wire, with the Wolves rink prevailing.
