SEMI-FINALS

THE FINALS

What a grand day for a game of bowls – nice and cool, no chance of any cancellation due to heat – just the odd bum on the bank – but no $30 fines and a few blokes who really can bowl.

Two grass greens running around 14 seconds and plenty of viewing space for spectators and supporters alike.

SECOND SEMI FINAL

MELVILLE 87 defeated SAFETY BAY 58

Glen Beard def Ray Beard 21/19
Mal Randall defeated Alan Holmes 28/10
Nev Brierley drew with Graham Scott 17/17
Steve Hughes defeated Mat Massari 25/12

Both clubs were very competitive at the outset with scores at the 38 end being 31/30 in favour of Melville. Ray Beard had Glen down 6/12 – the other rinks were all close.

The game played on with little changing on the big board until around the 51st end Melville picked up two fives and a two across three rinks – that 12 shots seemed to spur the locals on to bigger and better things with life becoming increasingly more difficult for Safety Bay.

At the 63rd end Melville had established a handy lead of 26 shots and that margin was held pretty much to the 84th end with Melville closing out a very nice 33 shot victory 91/58 and a berth in Sunday’s final.

Melville move straight into Sunday’s final and an opportunity to join Hilton Park in White next year – I must say a well deserved opportunity as they have been the second best team in this division all year. I wish them luck in the final.

Who will Melville play?

ELIMINATION FINAL

SOUTH PERTH 85 defeated WARNBRO 76

Max Petrich defeated Lindsay Strange 27/11
Kev Howieson defeated Willie Tan 23/20
Adrian Durrant lost to Chalky White 19/25
Robbertson lost to Bill Baker 16/20

What a game, Warnbro nearly wrote the fairlytale ending they were looking for however that was not to be and despite some very good bowling by the Wizards the fairy tale turned to a nightmare.

At the 36 end Warnbro lead the Millers by 18 shots 42/24 and you just had to believe that was a winning gap.

At the 61 end the gap was closed a little to a 14 sot lead with the big board showing a 66/52 in favour of Warnbro. Their big winner was Chalky White who still had a handy break on Pebbles Durrant being 21/9 up.

Max Petrich had a handy 15/10 score line with Lindsay Strange the other two rinks were reasonably close both with small margins in favour of Warnbro.

Well it was about that point that things changed and results started going the way of the Millers.

In the end it was the Petrich rink that won by 16 shots creating a gap that Warnbro could not run down that proved to be the difference. Max and his boys have had a brilliant year and this result certainly was not unexpected.

Pebbles Durrant aided by Gucci and his lads – got back into the game to go down by just 6 shots.

Kev Howieson and Willie Tan had a close tussle all day and the final honors went to South Perth by just 3 shots. Bill Baker and his charges maintained a lead most of the match and finished 4 shots the better over Robbie.

This was a very good match to watch and there were a lot of very good bowls played by both sides and this kept the small band of onlookers glued to the green until the last end or so.

Still at the 84th end it was bye bye to Warnbro until next year and Good luck to South Perth who had to front up to Safety Bay in the preliminary final in the afternoon.

PRELIMINARY FINAL

SAFETY BAY 83 defeated SOUTH PERTH 64

Ray Beard defeated Kev Howieson 25/16
Graham Scott defeated Max Petrich 23/11
Matt Massari lost to Adrian Durrant 16/18
Alan Holmes defeated Robbertson 20/19

Safety Bay had too many guns for South Perth and in finishing 19 shots up assured themselves of another crack at Melville and maybe a place in White next year.

Having watched the first 25 ends or so there was not a lot separating either club and a great contest seemed assured. Unfortunately I had another commitment and could not stay to watch this match unfold.

Also I must admit that the hospitality extended to me was making me and the breathaliser likely to be bad friends. So after a few thanks to a few good blokes – it was time for Andy to go elsewhere.

Many thanks to Tyrone Alberti, who phoned the final scores through to me latter in the day.

Well done Safety Bay – a solid win and a place in today’s final.

WHO WILL WIN THE RE-MATCH

MELVILLE verses SAFETY BAY

Both teams boast plenty of experience and this should be a great game – I cannot sit on the fence so here is my prediction.

MELVILLE by 15 shots

Good luck to both Clubs it should be a belter of a match.
Andy
