A powerful finish by the Croweaters after being well behind in the middle stages of the game sinks W.A who go down by two shot after enjoying a healthy lead throughout most of the game, it was 49/28 on end 42. It was extremely disappointing to see such a lead reeled in and passed right on the death knock. Most people would have felt the pain of it here at home as Sherro did.

Pieter Harris's rink who have led the way throughout the series for W.A had a handy 8 shot lead early in the game and got blown away by Jeff Aworth who is a one of Australia's best skips.
An abbreviated scorecard 10/2, 11/6, 13/10, 13/15, 13/18, 13/24, 14/26, 14/28, 14/30

It wouldn't be hard to imagine the terrible disappointment Pieter and the rink would would be feeling. The opportunity of winning the Alley Shield doesn't come along very often.
Russell Hughes rink was the mainstay for W.A and it would be fair to say that Russell had the least performed S.A rink of K. Coulls to play and took full advantage of it to nearly get W.A. across the line.

Jon Sharp and his rink enjoyed a big lead, 17/4 till around halfway thru the game and made it home by 3 shots.

Rooster Wishart and his rink were always behind the 8 ball in their game againstW Ruediger and his rink.
An abbreviated scorecard 3/4, 6/11, 10/15, 13/15, 13/18, 15/20, 15/26

While it is a sad moment for us all here in the West we can take some comfort from the performance of the side and they can hold their head high winning 5 of the 7 games, losing two games, one by 2 and the other by 1 shot.

This tremendous performance was acheived on the back of one rink contributing only two wins from 7 games for the event. There will have to be changes made for the up coming series to be held in Perth next season and the time has arrived for some of the young guns to be given a role to skip

A lot of credit must go to Prickles Thorn for his drive and enthusiasm along with new initiatives to turn the fortunes around for the State side.

Sherro had a word with Prickles today

" The team spirit was fantastic on tour, the players got behind one and other from day one. There was a change in the way the boys played on the heavy greens here in Tasmania, the team also played the 1 percenters which is so important and the results are there for everyone to see.
There is definitely room for improvement and watch out for W.A in the next series here in Perth"

--------------------------------PLAYER MILE STONES

There have been some important milestones along the way for some of the players.

Pieter Harris played his 150th game on tour and what a magnificent player he is.

Ross Dempsey, John Goddard, Russell Hughes and Kyle McIlroy all played their 100th game for W.A on this tour.
Trystan Smallacombe played his 50th of what should be many more games for the W.A team.

I would like to congratulate these players on their achievement and say that we are in good hands with players of this calibre representing our State..

The Sandgropers have finished the day sitting in top position. The win against the so far winless Northern Territory, was expected.
The only disappointment in this match was the loss by Rooster Wishart's rink to Scott Chamberlain who up to this game had not won a game in the series.. Rink wins are so important.

Pieter Harris (pictured) Great skipper for W.A

Pieter Harris's rink is the second best performed rink in the series, only T. Ellam from N.S.W is ahead of Pieter's rink, who have won 5 games and a draw, the draw for T. Ellam was against Russell Hughes..
This performance is what we have come to expect from Pieter Harris led rinks. Pieter has been the leading skip for W.A. now for the last 4 Sides Series.

John Sharp has done well with his rink and they finished the day with a huge win as did Russell Hughes's rink who have been solid so far

S.A is the mountain the side has to climb tomorrow for W.A
In the Ford/Wishart Trophy S.A did better overall than W.A. Since then the Sandgropers found form while the Croweaters have slipped somewhat.
W.A have come thru with flying colours and it boils down to this one game.

Form says all the way with W.A

A fabulous win by W.A.they are now on top of the table and almost have a good grip on the Alley Shield. This afternoon they play the Northern Territory and should be able to take care of business in this clash.
While the Sandgropers have less rink wins it has to be remembered they have not played the N.T and after this game they should have a healthy rink agg,

The next day in the last game of the series W.A play S.A. In the Test matches S.A went pretty well and have since beaten Qld so plenty will hinge on this game.
This afternoon Victoria's loss now has them in third place, play Qld and can't be certain of victory
The bottom line of course is for W.A to win their last two games and current form says they will

A terrific win by the W.A team and this win gives the team a real chance to win the coveted Ally Shield, they last won it way back 1999. They are perfectly placed to win it after some very good performances.

Up to this stage W.A has confounded the critics with an outstanding performance beating all teams bar Queensland who beat them by 2 shots.

Rooster Wishart and his rink have had their first win for the series and it is a huge win at that. It would a relief for the side to have broken thru for the win.
Pieter Harris rink has won again and what an impressive record Pieter has wracked up as a skipper for W.A. His side continues to impress winning three out of the four games so far.
Russell Hughes and his rink have won again and have had a great series also.

Jon Sharp and his rink win have 2 wins from 4 games.

Rink wins are now vital from here on.

W.A are second on the ladder even tho N.S.W defeated Victoria by 1 shot

Tomorrow the Sandgropers take on the mighty Victorians and what a game it promises to be.

One plays two and it is almost a winner take all game, especially for W.A who have will play the N.T side and at this stage they haven't won a game.

We are hopeful that BowlsWA can update the scores for the W.A. V VIC game a little more often than we have been getting this afternoon

When two teams are level regardless of percentage it is the team with the most rink wins that will win the Ally Shield

ROUND THREE

Green speed 12.5 sec
Queensland have beaten W.A by 2 shots in a hard fought encounter. Qld got away better than W.A and led 36/28 on the 42cd end. All rinks for W.A were there about's and only just behind.
From here on W.A started to reel the Banana Benders in with the rink of John Sharp showing the way against the tough rink of Mark Casey. They led from around the 10th end (9/7) and stormed away to almost get W.A over the line.

John Sharp (pictured) Skipper for W.A has won 2 of his three games

Pieter Harris has a ding dong go with Nathan Rice who is regarded by many as the equal of Kelvin Kerkow. little separated the two sides throughout the game, never more than a shot or three the diff.
Pieter Harris has won 2 of his three games

Russell Hughes playing against Shane Globits who was the number one ranked bowler in Australia last year, also had a close game right thru with so little between them on the scoreboard and were level at 14/14 at one stage.
Russell Hughes has 1 win 1 draw 1 loss

Rooster Wishart's rink were always behind on the scoreboard in the game against J. Grundon, and it could be said that this was the easier rink (if there is such a thing) to draw to play against for Qld.
The past two games Rooster's rink have had the hardest rink to play and did very well to lose those games by such small margins In this game they were down 3/7, 7/13, 8/15, 13/20.
Rooster has no wins from his three games

It has been a massive turn around in form for the W.A State side today and they can be proud of their acheivement, we also are proud of their effort.
However this is only the first day and there are three more days to go so lets hope W.A can keep on with what they did today, it won't be easy

W.A have done the job again to defeat the home state, Tasmania, in convincing fashion. The win has been bought about by the massive win by the rink of Pieter Harris who had lost only one game in the Test matches.

Rooster Wishart and his rink came back hard after trailing 6/14 to fall 1 shot short of victory against the best rink for Tasmania, that of Mark Strochnetter
It would be fair to say that Rooster has had the harder draw in the two games he has played to date.

Jon Sharp lost after leading 14/11 in the late stages of the game and finally losing 17/24
Russell Hughes had a handy win following his draw this morning.

"Speaking with Prickles Thorn after the game he paid a tribute to The brilliant form Of Pieter Harris and Rhett Butler, both players were outstanding today.
In general the players in all rinks lifted to the form they are capable of playing today and were very much buoyed by the morning result against N.S.W.
Sherro there is great camaraderie and a terrific atmosphere in the side and they are eager and ready for the big games tomorrow."

Some that got a mention for their great games today were Rooster, Slav, Russell Hughes and The Jones Boy.

Sherro has been informed this morning that the team has several players who have been hit with a devastating flu. I was not aware of this situation and even after talking with Prickles on the Sunday he didn't say anything other that John Slavich was crook. One could think that this flu going thru the team would have had something to do with some of the previous results

W.A come good with a great win against N.S.W. Coming into this match they would have been very much the underdogs when you take into account the results of the four earlier Test matches.

Of course this unexpected win is one of huge proportions for W.A, Pieter Harris led the way for W.A with a telling win against S. Garvey. His rink has been a shining light on tour so far and as they say winning form is good form..

Jon Sharp has an important win after losing three of his first 4 games in the Test matches.
Russell Hughes's rink, makes a great recovery after yesterday's heavy loss to force a draw
Most would say Rooster drew the short straw to play Steve Glasson and a 5 shot loss against one of the most powerful rinks in the series is not a bad effort.

Next up is the home side Tasmania who beat Qld and that was a real surprise

W.A would be low in confidence after the Test matches on friday against the A.C.T. and today.
I am wondering if the light preparation for this series is having some effect.
It is true that W.A have had a program prior to leaving for the sides series in the past that was too much. Maybe this time it has not been enough.

It is hard to beleive that Russell Hughes's rink could lose by such a margin and that Jon Sharp's rink could only manage one win so far in the series, a small one at that.

It has to be taken into account that S.A are not considered any longer to be a strong Bowling State.

What will tomorrow bring? W.A. have N.S.W first up, they did beat them in the last series, however we don't have Robbie Ball, who has since retired from Interstate Bowls. N.S.W are very good on heavy tracks, or any track for that matter and I must say I fear for the worst, after them W.A then have to play home side Tasmania who beat W.A in Darwin.

It could be a long day tomorrow for the W.A team, however things as we know, can change very quickly in Lawn Bowls. Lets hope tomorrow is that day and the boys can play to their true ability

Interesting to see what the selectors do overnight.

The Rink of Jon Sharp has yet to win a game on tour so far and it must be a worry to the selectors as to why the rink is not firing. Their agg after three games is 0/3 - 27 shots

South Australia are not highly regarded in this series. They are in a rebuilding phase since the main core of players retired a couple of seasons ago.
So far the W.A team has done a reasonable job considering the light preparation for this series.

February 9, 2007
W.A played the A.C.T and we see the A.C.T. win very comfortably in the first game of the day, however it looks like the W.A. boys have come back well to what appears to be a win and make it a draw for the days play.
It is good for the team to have this hit out and iron out a few bugs here and there.
Tomorrow is a rest day and they play again on Sunday against S.A for the Ford/Wishart Trophy .
All in all, considering the team has had such a light build up for this series it has given the team a starting base from which to build on from here and we would expect a better showing on Sunday.
