L/R: Steve O`Neil and Fred DiGuiseppe were both outstanding players in one of the best finals you could wish to see, they are all smiles after their thrilling victory

Steve O`Neil

Steve O`Neil and Fred DiGuiseppe won the Osborne Pk Club Championship Pairs when they defeated Bill Galloway and Grant Nicol in a truly outstanding contest 19 - 12.....

Both sides had come thru very tough sections to make the final, it was an even money bet as to who would win this contest. Bill Galloway and the General Grant Nicol, were looking to go one better after being last years runner up.

Steve O`Neil joined the Saints this season and has proved to a wonderful player who fitted straight into the Premier League side while Fred DiGuiseppe has been a good solid player for the Saints over a long period of time.

The game started out brilliantly for Steve and Fred who picked up 4, 2, 2 shots in the first 3 ends to shoot to a very handy lead. From here it was backs to the wall stuff for Bill and the General, they had to hold their nerve and keep the situation from slipping away before the game would become out of reach.

Bill and the General moved their score to be 8-4 down after 5 ends, they had really settled down and set about moving closer..

Steve and Fred were both playing so well in these jam packed heads, but slowly and surely they were being pegged back by brilliant bowls (the bowls had to be brilliant from Bill and Grant) to see their lead whittled down so much so the score was 12-11 to start the 13th end.

We must add this game was no ordinary game standard wise, the quality of the game was outstanding to say the least. Packed heads were the order of the day, it was hard to get the shot and even harder to hold it. Every player contributed to this most interesting and intriguing contest

Who was playing the best of these two sides was hard to say but it was skill, skill and more skill when under pressure from players of both sides.

From the 13th end it was Steve and Fred who responded best and working hard to resist the huge pressure from Bill and the General to win the hard ends, and they were extra hard fought ends indeed, keeping the momentum going their way, winning all but one of the remaining ends to finally run out winners 19-12.

The big crowd got their money's worth watching this great spectacle and in the end it would be fair to say that Steve and Fred answered every challenge thrown at them by Bill and the General and finished a shade the better to be very worthy winners.

You have to feel for Bill and Grant who were last years runner up, they would be scratching their heads and ask how much better do we have to play to win this title because they gave their all in a very skilful display.

Of course winners are always grinners and to the victor goes the spoils. Both Steve and Fred were soooooooo gooooooooood and deserved their magnificent victory this evening.

L/R: Bill Galloway and Grant Nicol,
Two great competitors, both were so good tonight. While it is always hard when you lose, they both can still raise a smile after being runner up two years in succession

The Plate

was a hard fought game with plenty of skill and an exciting finish with the very promising Young Daniel Adam and his partner Steve McKay holding on to win a very good game against Cliff Guelfi and Eddy Richardson 19-17.
