Tim has raised some strong and contentious points in his article, they are soley Tim's views and not those of the Osborne Park Bowling Club or Sherro.

Round 4_5 One White Preview

Before I commence my preview I have to get this out.

The Bassendean & Kardinya clubs have had enough forethought to promote the game of lawn bowls that they have produced a pre-draw prior to Saturday.

This is another example of individuals clubs pushing bowls in the direction where it should be headed and is not an initiative of BowlsWA.

If Pam Glossop (CEO) is not embarrassed whilst all significant initiatives happen around her rather than because of her then she bloody well should be.

I was advised by older heads that Ms Glossop’s predecessor Andrew Collings was somewhat shackled in that he did not have overarching powers as individual clubs set the direction for bowls. However, that has now changed and from where I stand the new CEO has used those powers to try to move the game twenty years backwards.

What the CEO and BowlsWA do not seem to grasp is that lawn bowls has moved to keep pace with society. When I started playing in 1983 the behaviour of some of our younger players of today would never have been tolerated.

However, it is not 1983, it is 2009. In 1983 simply following a bowl to the head was considered in poor taste. We also all dressed in white and leads and seconds had to stand on the banks and not be involved other than delivering their bowls.

I do not agree with some of antics of certain individuals (young & middle aged) but in the main they are still personalities of today’s game. If you do not like it, leave.

They will not change and no matter what laws you bring it will not change them. I am now 51 years of age and they do not bother me in the least.
What concerns me more is that I have not been to a venue since my return from country WA where someone has not raised the issue of a vote of no confidence in the CEO and BowlsWA.
I personally do not advocate that but if you push too hard in the wrong direction expect some push back.

Now let’s get on with what we all play for

Bassendean (3rd ) vs Kardinya (2nd)

Black, Robertson, Hall & Opie Nolan HALL
---------------Vs
Sardellic, Vinci, Foy & Comrie

If I didn’t have my hands full at Yokine this Saturday I would travel to watch this match. I really can’t pick the winner. We all know how good Justin is but Danny Comrie is never beaten and will take it to the line. A draw.

Nolan Hall (pictured) has been a valuable team Member at Bassendean for several years will be looking for a big game against the Kardy Kats

Harber, Wattleworth, Hutchinson & Greenhalgh

--------------------Vs
Sweetman, Wake, Gould & Yates

Michael Yates and team have the perfect 3-0 record at this stage and plays Craig Greeenhalgh who sits on a 2-1 return.

Probably the big news is that Kevin Gray has quit Bassendean after not being able to come to terms with the position he was asked to play.

However this gives Hutchy a great opportunity and allows Basso to bring in former junior champion and a very good player in his own right in Steve Wattleworth.

Michael Yates has not put a foot wrong and has a very good team at his disposal. “Greeny” is an enigmatic type of player when he’s good he is “real good” but if off can slump.

I think Yater will win this one.

Early, Hotker Heruer & Axford
Vs
B Heildt Trojak T Ball & Brad Ball

Axy also has the perfect 3-0 record and is playing Brad Ball who skippered for the first time last week to lose by a solitary shot.

Will be a ripper of a match that could be determined by the performances of Terry Ball & Marcel Heruer in relation to the shape of the heads left for the skipper.

I think Brian Axford can retain his unblemished run. Something for the record, I have been told that Axy (reigning State singles champion) is only good with four bowls.

What a load of rubbish. Three years ago when we played together at Scarborough where he was star as skipper with two bowls and won games out of his own hand.

I asked Dave Wood (pictured) if he thought the Kardy Kats could win this game,

Dave Wood
Kirkup, Irvine Lynch & Patterson
--------------Vs
Wood, Hastings, A Jones & Heldt

Whilst the “colt” won well last week and has a very good team with him the same argument can be mounted for Wayne Heldt and his powerful team. Again, I am not sure but lean towards

Wayne to win

Kardinya to win (Many thanks to Steve Black & Rob Foy for arranging this very good initiative)

Cambridge 9th vs Thornlie (4th)

A great opportunity for Thornlie to consolidate and that is what I think they will do. Ian Rewell I will be keeping an eye out for your score.

With Pohe, Vaughan and Walker at the helm they seem to have too much firepower for an undermanned Knights.

Dalkeith/Nedlands (7th vs Manning (5th)

How could you pick against Manning after two weeks of sensational form. When guns like Greg Fairhead and Peter Cole are playing in the third position it only gives you confidence to believe they will win many more games this year.

Two weeks ago I thought (relegation probably) now I am thinking (top four).

Osborne Park (8th) vs Stirling (1st)

In a word, STIRLING. Cannot make a case that even I would believe that could see the Saints beat a team that has only lost 1.5 rinks for the season.

Wanneroo (6th) vs Kalamunda (10th)

I will pick with my heart and not my head and suggest that the way Kalamunda are travelling that the trip back from Wanneroo is going to a long one.

Wanneroo
