PREVIEW - ROUND NINE
The “Rug Kings” toppled Mossies, winning on three rinks. Alan Erceg led the way for the home team with a solid 12 shot win over Lester Mortimer, Tom Norac took over the Tony Krajancic rink and almost dragged them over the line giving Mossies and Steve Withers their only point.
Marko P finished 4 shots the better over Brad Ball and Nifty Stevens rounded out the seven points with a one shot win and giving Rags R and company their first loss for the season.
Well done Stirling inflicting Mosman’s first loss for the season and obtaining a place in the four for your troubles.
Next week
Stirling is at home to Morley and Mosman Park goes north to Wanneroo, certainly one interesting game.
The only accolade for Hilton goes to Dan Slade holding the Payne rink to a draw.
Rance Dewson handed a bowling lesson to Luke Garbutt and Young Duggie Eaton giving out a bit of the same to Norm Ball. Keith Guelfi got the better of Travis Simpson by just 4 shots.
Have had no reports from either club however we should assume the green was quick and certainly seemed to suit the host club.
Ossie Park is just out of the four by percentage only and Saturday’s big win did not hurt their percentage at all.
On the other hand Hilton is just a little deeper in the dreaded RZ (relegation zone for the uneducated).
This should have been a predictable result – but the margin was huge.
Next week
Ossie Park host Leeming and Hilton are at home to Thornlie.
Our Morley man reports as follows; How close was that and on a slower green than was anticipated, but that is what home ground advantages are for.
Well, it had to happen sometime. JA getting beaten that is! Melville 19, Morley 14. It isn't very often three of the four players in a rink say they had very ordinary games, and given that, to only lose by five shots is in itself a pretty good effort.
But they will bounce back, no doubt about that. The boys in this rink are a very determined bunch.
Wayne Neilson and his boys did the job in very emphatic way. 29-16. and even though the leader didn't have one of his better days the following three backed him up, which makes for a good team balance.
-------------------Wayne Neilson in top form for the Morley Mavericks
-------------------
But one player having a great season is Graham White. Playing the hardest role as second, he continually was able to get shot, making it easier for Bryce to add, and when needed Wayne played some bombs to get even bigger counts. hence the big margin.. A great team effort setting up the eventual aggregate win.
Murray Robinson, in his first tilt at skipper would probably say that the final score12-27. wasn't a true reflection of the bowls played by his side. and he would be correct !! A perfect example would be when he hit a drive absolutely smack on, three down at the time, only to see the kitty rebound back onto the green, still three down, and Steve Hughes with a bowl still to play. now 4 down.
From that moment on things didn't go to plan, with his boys holding shot on many, many an occasion, only to see a conversion. In the end they were very thankful they didn't cost the aggregate. This rink WILL win if the bowls played today are any indication.
And now to the BIG Pom. Aung.. never headed all day, and getting great bowls from AB.. A slight hiccup on the way saw six dropped at a very important part of the game, although they had a commanding lead. And that saw the boys go into the last end with the aggregate tied.. What could they conjure up to ensure the win?
Well it started with Ewan Apps' first bowl.. damn close... causing the oposition leader to niggle..and miss.. and his second bowl damn closer.. but answered by a great bowl to trail the kitty ever so slightly, but still our shot..
Up stepped Marko (no, not that one).. Callcott.., and with his second bowl sat in the head beautifully.. AB then came to the mat, and ignored his skippers request to put a bowl a metre behind the head, instead putting it directly behind the kitty one foot away (30 cm to the uninitiated).
Try as they might the Melville boys couldn't change the head, and BINGO !!!!! Aggregate to Morley by the merest of margins. One rink was very, very happy, and I don't need to tell you who they were!!!
Next week
Morley travel to Stirling and Melville are at home to Bedford.
BEDFORD 79 (6) V THORNLIE 65 (2)
Well done to Bedford 6 valuable points and a well played match. The green was very good, quick and true and should have suited the visitors down to a tee.
Unfortunately it was McKenzie and his lads who were the villains for the visitors. With his front two playing well the back two could do nothing to keep any sort of balance in the final result.
Well done to Kevin Bourke and his rinks a huge win 32 to 6 and really setting up a great day for Bedford. The Big Fella is still in shock we believe – let us hope he will bounce back nest week (assuming he gets a game).
As for the other three rinks they went the way of the visitors – Paul Pohe ran out 10 shots the better over Neil Watson – Glyn Vaughan 4 shots the better over Paul Hunter and Ric Gilbert had a chance of winning with his last bowl, missing a trail by the narrowest of margins to drop that rink by just 2 shots to Cliff Graybrook, Bedford’s best performed skipper so far this year.
Bedford has finished the first round just 4.5 points shy of the four a very good effort given their player losses from last season. Thornlie are yet to win an aggregate on the road.
Next week Bedford travel to Melville and Thornlie go west to Hilton Park.
WANNEROO 96 (8) V LEEMING 57 (0)
Well I tipped Leeming to break their drought and Wanneroo screwed that up for me as well.
Still the score card shows a comprehensive victory to the home side, well done to The Roos and to say the 8 points were needed was certainly an understatement.
The Roos are still 10.5 points inside the dreaded RZ so they still have a lot to do in the last round. However, they should take some confidence into their next set of fixtures as all rinks performed well on Saturday.
--------------------Derek Bowen in action against Leeming on Saturday
----------------------------
What of the Lions – just 11 points to show for nine outings – not good and the club looks certain to line up next year in Blue. That is probably the only certain outcome looking forward following the first half of the season.
Next week
Wanneroo host Mosman Park and Leeming travel north again to Ossie Park.
SUMMARY
The selectors in s few clubs have some sorting out to do – just nine matches remaining this year – the fight for the four is tightening up and losses will be costly from here out.
Clubs need to be performing at their best as we close in on the finals – there are no January premierships.
Keep up the practice and you will perform better – I’m off to put a few down myself.
Tarah and good bowling to all
PS Happy New Year everybody.
