PREVIEW - ROUND EIGHT
MORLEY 97 (7) V BEDFORD 65 (1)
From our Morley correspondent
It must be said that today’s game was played in probably the most trying conditions experienced this year. The wind was howling, the green had great speed. Close to 16 seconds, and if you were using size fours you had better let them go the OTHER side of the line... A foot wide of the line and the bowl was absolutely useless.
On the wide hand, use as much of the other rink as was possible. Pick the wrong line and the bowl had the chance of being swept out of bounds. These are conditions that make our game so great.
Even a little rain didn't slow the green all that much.
John Armstrong returned to the role of skipper, and got over the line, 26-15, after coming from behind. The reason his rink was losing had everything to do with the talented skipper Paul Hunter. He was having a blinder, and seemed unstoppable, converting at will. But the ever reliable Billy Urqhart, steady Wayne Barker and dogged Gavin Grieve refused to give in. That set the scene for a big comeback after being down 4-5 shots early, a fantastic effort by the boys.
Wayne Nielson played some absolute bombs to help his boys get the points...29-14... and the beer tickets!!! His leader Glen Britten was the most consistent, but ably supported by evergreen Graham White (who is having a great year) and Bryce Gunson chipped in with some great drives.
Pity he uses the wide drawing Taylors of yesteryear. His immediate opponents use the no bias bowls of today!!! Coming from Maylands, where he skippered, Bryce has been a great find for Morley, and compliments Wayne with his knowledge of the game. All in all, it was great to see the boys doing their job week in and week out.
Sherro's rink looked headed for a disaster...3-19 down, though the front end was doing some very good stuff...Barry O'Byrne handled the difficult conditions reasonably well, but particularly Murray Robinson who accepted the very hard role playing second. All too often though, a good head was changed from being 2-3 up to being down by Peter Healey. Lots of luck in how the head was changed, but that is a big part of the game.
Keith Holland was a new addition and battled on manfully, at times putting in some beauties... it was to the credit of the front end that the score didn't blow out with the possibility of costing the aggregate, eventually losing 14-22. A lot can be said for hanging in there.
The big Pom Aung had a start that was never overtaken...7 shots on the second end, but it must be said that he was out of the count for the biggy, and was fined accordingly.
The new leader, Ewan Apps, had a pretty reasonable day, and given the amount of time he spends practicing he will certainly get better. Mark Callcott as second is doing what good seconds do backing up the leader and has nearly all the shots required for the role... a third in the making...
Then of course we have big Al, though he has trimmed down around fifteen stone...but the boy can play, and is a perfect foil for the big Pom. A steady game by all, a team effort, and deserving of the 28-14 win.
Now for the break, but the boys are still focused on the job at hand...every game is a new game, nothing will be taken for granted and write us off at your peril.
LEEMING 78 (1) V STIRLING 79 (7)
From our Leeming correspondent
A slightly less disappointing day yesterday which started so well after 12 ends when we were up 10 – 15 shots mainly thanks to one rink!!!!
Greens did not suit Stirling with two short downpours before the game; they ran at a sluggish 11 – 12 seconds.
It came down to the last bowl of the day with Bartlett trailing the jack sideways for a measure that didn’t go in our favour.
In short.......
• Pasalich had the better of Rutherford all day.
• Erceg brilliant at times and a good day overall – was the difference, honourable mention goes to Tucker with important head changing bowls consistently, and travels from Mandurah each week – big effort!.
• In the close one (final score belies the game) Stevens got the better of Bartlett and won it for Stirling in the last end. We were even on the aggregate going into the last end.
• THE MONSTER RESULT – Parker over the widely touted Krajancic!!!! 33 -7 unbelievable. Simple case of the first three for Leeming very consistent and Krajancic going to the head 2, 3 and 4 down every time. It was 21 – 1 after 10 ends.
This is the team that was annihilated at Melville last week 40 – 10 so a 56 shot turnaround was a surprise. Krajancic drove at the head I reckon 15 times for 1 hit – BAD DAY!
Anyway as they say in the classics TARAH.........and merry Xmas to you and your family.
The happier Leeming Lion
HILTON PARK 89 (7) V WANNEROO 61 (1)
Xmas came early for our mates at Hilton. Not sure as to what has happened to The Roos – a bad loss last week and this week down to Hilton????
Young Dan Slade got it all over Mr Bowen 23/14 and I’m certain that Danny’s boys were more than happy with that outcome as Derek has been in good touch over recent weeks.
Travis and his rink created a travesty handing Shagger Parmenter and his charges a 15 shot lesson. Whilst my mate Echo, struggled against the guile of young Normie Ball.
The only highlight for the Roos was the Watson led rink who eventually triumphed by 6 shots over new skip, old Mr reliable, Chris McMahon.
The win placed Hilton within 5 points of sixth spot, a place I’m certain they would love to find.
Well done to HP and back to the drawing board for the up and down Roos.
MOSMAN PARK 88 (7) V MELVILLE 67 (1)
When the dust settled The Magic were some 21 shots shy of victory and Mossies just keep on keeping on. Yet to be beaten, Mossies continue to brush the opposition aside, making their claim to top spot very credible indeed.
Mad Mal Randall the awfully nice Pom from Applecross – continues to trouble the opposition and trouble Steve Withers he did and in doing so created the only highlight for the Magic’s archives, winning 22/13 – well done Mal.
Lester Mortimer shook up Nifty Brierley’s rink by 7 shots – Brad Ball installed some passion into his charges handing out a 19 shot lesson to Mike Cooper whilst Steve Hughes fought out a tight one with the evergreen Rags Rainaldi – with the honours going to Rags by just 4 shots.
Is their a club out there who can stop Mossies?????
If yes please stand up and do it NOW!!!
Not much more that can be said about the ladder leaders that has not already been said.
Keep up the good work and you’ll be in Red next year.
THORNLIE 109 (7) V OSBORNE PARK 62 (1)
Ripe one week and rotten the next, well this week The Ravens were very ripe, showing a clean pair of heels to the Saints.
The only highlight for Ossie Park’s reel this week came courtesy of Keith G – who accounted for the Big Fella by 4 shots, KG an his charges did it reasonably well all day and by all accounts should have had a much bigger margin but McKenzie just kept making life difficult.
-----------------------------------------Keith Geulfi (Osborne park) has a great delivery
----------------------------
Keith Geulfi has had an outstanding
career in Lawn Bowls Keith has played for Osborne Park, Scarborough and Carnarvon. He is the ultimate competitor and has many trophies to show for his efforts over the years
The green although it did not look good, played well with the breeze made life difficult for both clubs.
Paul Pohe led the way for the home team accounting for Rance D 33/14. Paul’s blokes did it good for most of the day and Paul’s finishing was just what was required.
Another great rink performance from Bubbles Vaughan with everyone on his rink stepping up to the plate when required and finishing the day 19 shots clear of Young Duggie Eaton. This put a clear break in the aggregate race for the home club.
Glyn Vaughan (Thornlie) One great package delivers a beauty
-------------------------
Glyn Vaughan is all of what you want in a bowler, he is very skilful, never beaten and has attitude. Has been a valuable player at what ever club he has played for, Cannington, Vic Park, Cockburn and now Thornlie
Last to finish was Tricky Ricky G and his lads who ran out very comfortable winners over Cliff G with the final score being 30/16 in favour of the Ravens.
The win places The Ravens back in third spot and Ossie’s loss saw them s;ip to fifth spot with Stirling rounding out the four.
There were some pretty happy faces at Ravenhill Road last night as this match was seen as a danger game for the home club – given what the Saints had done to the Roos the week before.
SUMMARY
Well Xmas is arriving and a well earned break for most bowlers – with still plenty left to play for and 10 rounds to go - it is still a relatively wide open contest.
What does 2009 hold for all clubs in White – stay tuned and find out – in the meantime have a great Xmas and an extremely prosperous new year and we will see you all back on the track next year.
Keep ‘em tight and Tarah to all.
DANTE MARIANI

OSBORNE Pk BC
Dante has
been and still is a darn good player for Osborne Park
One of the highlites in his long bowling career was winning the Master singles about 15 years ago.
He played the best ever bowl I have seen
played in any game
Bedford 91 Osborne Pk 97 Dante played the last bowl of the game and played a miricle shot to take two bowls out an get the required 7 shots to give Bedofrd victory.
It was the way he got those two bowls out that made it so memorable. hence the name. The Miricale man.
He has played at Osborne Park, Wanneroo, Bedford and back to Osborne Park. Alway a hard man to beat
