REPORT ON ‘ONE WHITE’ 2008 /9 PREVIEW -
ROUND ONE

ROUND ONE

November 2, 2008

Round one has been played and results pretty much as one would expect, with the only surprise to me being the match between Morley and Stirling.

The two favourites scored the maximum, Thornlie and Mosman Park both had huge wins with margins of 53 and 37 respectively and sit 1 and 2 on the table.

The game of the day went to Morley who triumphed over Stirling by 18 shots and picked up a handy 7 points for their trouble.

Ossie Park comfortably accounted for Leeming by 17 shots and a 7/1 result, whilst the battle of the Red relegation at Bedford went the way of Melville by 6 shots and a 7/1 score line.

Not sure much can be read into this group of results other than a couple of clubs have confirmed that they may be in for a long season.

Thornlie V Hilton

The Ravens – who fancy themselves for promotion this year certainly came out with all guns blazing! At around the 18th end all rinks had established sizeable leads and were looking the goods.

Paul Pohe’s rink settled down to struggle out a win by the smallest margin – just 3 shots over Ball.

Glyn Vaughan and his men were having a great day, Tony Churcher was setting up most heads early leaving the back end to consolidate which they did pretty much for most of the day. Vaughan by 10 shots was the final outcome over Luke Garbutt.

Danny Penman and his rink set the tone for the two remaining rinks. Got the good start and they kept the pressure on all day. Travis Simpson was under the pump and despite playing a reasonable game himself, could not stop the Penman led rink from romping to a 21 shot win. Alan Petchell, Johnny Walker and Murray White all made solid contributions throughout the game.

That left the big fella McKenzie taking some revenge on Dan Slade (who beat Macka on Thursday by 6). The Ravens jumped to a good lead early up by 9 or 10 to 1 then proceeded to drop a 5 and a 2 to get things back on level terms, that was that however with Ric Gilbert playing some bombs when the rink was in trouble and the Big Fella having a bit of a day out as well
Hilton score never rose above 9. Macka’s rink ran out winners by 19 shots.

The reward for a strong showing was top spot on the ladder albeit by percentage over Mossies.
Next week The Ravens travel to Melville – very interesting?

Mosman Park V Wanneroo

Expected this game to show a little more than it did, as most punters expected a good showing from Wanneroo – not to be!

Steve Withers and his rink ran out winners in what appeared to be a reasonably tight match over Bowen and his boys. With a margin of 4 shots this was the closest result that Wanneroo were to achieve for the day. Steve always a great exponent of our game no doubt may well have been the difference on this rink.

Lester Mortimer did battle with Echo Widermanski and when the dust settled it was Mortimer by 5.

Brad Ball stepping out for his first game with a new club did a great job by recording the biggest margin of the day. An 18 shot win over Watson and his rink was a great start for the newcomer to Mossies and vindicated the chase this club made to sign him for 2008.
Brad Ball in action at the recent Bedford Bowl

----------------------Brad Ball
That left The Rags outfit. Senior and Junior playing skip and third accounted comfortably for Barry Parmenter and his rink by 10 shots. The old saying of cream rising to the top is very apt here as Johnny Rainaldi can always find a way to upset your day.

Well done to Mossies, 8 points and second spot is just the start they would have wanted. Wanneroo on the other hand may have some soul searching to complete before next week.

Mossies travel to Ossie Park next week and as both of these sides had wins in round 1, we look forward to this clash.

Melville V Bedford

Last year both of these clubs battled in Red, what can we learn from their clash in round 1, 76 to 70 and 7 points to the visitors.

Melville has got their season off to a good start.

Neville BrierlyNeville Breirley took on Cliff Graybrook and ran out 3 shots the better on the day. Cliff is always the competitor and Melville must be happy with the point earnt on this rink.

Neville Brierly had an important win against Bedford

Mal Randall had the better of Paul Hunter and came home with the point by 6 shots.

Silvio Vassallo was Melville’s only losing rink going down to Crook by 7. From all accounts Silvio did not have a great day for his new club, we know he can produce the goods and time will tell.

Last but not least was the Steve Hughes led rink, who won in a tight encounter over Mr. Burke with the margin just 4 shots.

Not sure what can be read into these results and next week may tell a story for both clubs. Bedford is away to Stirling and Melville host The Ravens. Fortunes for these two clubs will unfold over the next week or two.

Morley V Stirling

The following is a report from our Morley contact.

Morley 7, Stirling 1, what better way to start the season than getting near maximum points against (on paper) a side boasting the talents of Tony Krackerjack, Neville Stevens, and mister reliable Mark Pasalich.. It was due mainly to the "hang in there" attitude of Wayne Neilson's rink, who came from behind to record a 15 shot win.

They didn't hit the front till end 15, and then went on to win the next 5 ends. A pretty significant victory given that it was against Tony Kraka.

Steady bowls by Peter Aungier's rink proved the difference against Mark Pasalich; they were never headed all day.

John Armstrong seemed to be having a stroll in the park as his team went about demolishing Alan Erceg's team, at one stage winning seven ends on the trot. Though the numbers weren't big, it was still pretty consistent stuff, also winning 5 of the last 6 ends.

As for our new skipper Brian Saul, well the game played by Neville Stevens was of the highest order. The first end was to be the telling point in this game, down 4, a perfect bowl converted to 4 up and that was to happen all day.
He was backed up by the old fella.Andy Tucker. Both played exceptionally well. Whenever in trouble Neville played superb bowls to either cut down, or draw shot. We, unfortunately had no answer, hence the score line. But hey, 7-1... a great result

Next week Morley visit Wanneroo and Stirling are at home to Bedford. That may tell us a little about both of these clubs.

Osborne Park V Leeming

Saved the best until last – The Mafia V The Travel Kings (joking of course). This outcome went the way one expected with Ossie Park bringing home 7 points.

Keith Guelfi’s solid win over Alan Pryce was probably the difference in these two sides. The good looking brother – Cliff struggled and in the end went down by 5 shots to Mr. Ford, Tommy Glendinning would have had some say in this result I’m sure.

Young Duggie Eaton fell over the line by a single shot against Morris and his rink whilst Ossie Parks new recruit, that refugee from Wickepin, Colin Fleay accounted for Ashworth by 5 shots.

As expected Leeming found the going a little tough and with the losses in player stock they have had to live with over winter this result was predictable. Still only 17 shots in the margin perhaps they may find a way to win a few more games.

The Saints on the other hand, travelled south and did the job of work they expected to do and got their season off to a great start.

Next week The Saints are home to Mossie Park and Leeming travel to Hilton Park.

Round 1 produced mostly predictable outcomes and Andy will watch the coming weeks with interest.
