MANY THANKS TO DEAN O'FLAHERITY (pictured) FOR PROVIDING THE SCORES

Well done to the Doubleview Bowling club, who had to overcome many hurdles to get this event to run as smoothly as it did.

The Master Pairs was won by John Fewster and David Van Horn, the boys hail from Gingin. There is no doubt that most people would not have selected them to win playing against the classy combination and raging favourites, Anthony Provost and Kyle McIlroy. They won 21/19

When I arrived the scores were 4/4, however I was not able to see much of the game due to prior commitments and had to leave when the scoreline was 9/4 in favour of Ant and Kyle.
It appeared then the boys from the bush had their work cut out for them at that stage and it was hard to envisage them actually winning against one of the best players in Australia, from that scoreline.
I must say congratulations to both players, and once again the old saying bears true "it ain't over till the last bowl is bowled" stands true once again
John and David have always been around the business end in many major tournaments and this might be their biggest and best win. I do apologise for the lack of detail in this magnificent game and victory for the Boys from Gingin.

In the semi-finals there were two crackerjack games

FIRST SEMI

A. Provost/K. McIlroy (comp) def Jim "The big Mac" McKenzie /G. Vaughan (Thornlie) 20/15.

The Thornlie boys jumped out of the blocks early and shot away to what appeared to be a match winning lead of 11/3. Hey this just what the doctor ordered and Jim and Glynn must have been thinking the impossible was about to happen.
Well when you are against a player that posseses the talent of the 'The Big Ant' anything is possible and he came to the party and it was a clinic with the Ant playing 11 of the best ends you would see anywhere in the world said Jim McKenzie. So good he was, that it propelled them to a match winning lead. Remarkably, the Thornlie Boys had a small chance on the last end but couldn't get the Kitty clean to make it a draw.
Jim was also full of praise for Kyle McIlroy who played his part in the game and finished by saying it was pleasure to watch such great young talent in action
Glynn Vaughan was also paid a huge compliment from Jim saying he was the best player he had played with for a long time and thru the series Glynn in one of the games had put his four bowls on 4/5 ends, that a tea towl would be all that was needed to cover them.

SECOND SEMI

John Fewster/David Van Horn def Joe "Never miss a drive" Rollnik and Ron Hutchinson 20/19

This game was full of tension and excitement all the way thru. Never much separating them throughout the game. It came down to the last end when the score was 19/19 and an extra end was required to determine the winner.
The first of the two ends were killed and finally on the third replay it was John and David who prevailed. All who have ever played Joe Rollnik know how good a player he is and skipper is his go.
It is an awful feeling to have played your heart out and find that a one shot loss is the end of a great game and a great series. Well done to both Joe and Ron Hutchinson.
This game was just what the Gingin boys needed to fire them up for the final

February 26, 2007

There were no real surprises in the morning games today, with perhaps Eddy Johnson and Jim Barry having a comfortable win over Rhett Butler. They were then put out by the well performed GinGin pair of John Fewster and David Van Horn
The afternoon games provided some fireworks when Rod Heaton/Mike Yates and Anthony Provost/Kyle McIlroy locked horns. The last end was killed five times with the Yokine pair trying to overcome a 5 shot deficit to finally lose by 1 shot.
The Big Mac, as Tim Murray calls him and his partner Glynn Vaughan have been traveling nicely and claimed a couple of big scalps those of Prickles Thorn/Pat Buller and B. Parmenter/ Ted Alden. Both combinations looked like they had a great chance in this event.
Joe Rollnik/Rick Hutchinson done well to get over a very in form Ron Stockton and have every chance to make the final tomorrow.

Anthony Provost/Kyle McIlroy look to be the winners to me

The Semi-finals will be played at Doubleview tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10.30 in the morning. The Finals will be played in the afternoon.

Today's round saw some results that we did not expect when we see Peter Cole and Bradley Cole dispose of a great combo in Steve Srhoy and Mike Zusman by one shot then get put out by Anthony Provost in the last game of the day.
Eddy Johnson and Jim Barry did well by putting one of the favourites out of business, Dennis Katunarich and Robbie Ball by a very good margin 16/7. They still have some toughies to get over but anything is possible especially after their big win today.
Ron Stockton and Jimmy Gupanis had a couple of good wins, defeating Ken Screech and The father son combo of Tony and Len Krajancic.. Jim Gupanis has won this event in the past and at his best will be hard to beat.

DRAW FOR TOMORROW 26/2/07
It is a very good field for tomorrow and I think Anthony Provost appears to loom as the man to beat and he lines up against John Morgan and Andy Tucker, I am sure that the Stirling boys will be having a fair crack at it but they do have a task on their hands here..
However there are some great games, Jim McKenzie and Glynn Vaughan playing Ted Alden and Barry Parmenter looks like it will be a great game
Gordon Bradford with Peter Hodson playing Rod Heaton and Mike Yates should be interesting

All in all there are plenty of good combinations in the last 16 and it should be a great days bowling.

February 19, 2007

The popular Doubleview Master pairs got underway yesterday with the first half of the field competing.
There were some un-expected results and close games over the days play.

The big game of the first round was a clash of the heavyweight combo's of Mark Krajancic/Ross McKenzie playing Daniel Brown and Luke Richardson with a close result 17/14 going to Dan and Luke.
Three Dalkeith players featuring in this contest, Skipper Dan Brown being the odd man out.

In the second round G. Bradford/ Peter Hodgson Gosnells caused a major upset defeating the highly rated combo of Daniel Brown/ Luke Richardson Comp 18/17.

Another upset was that of Trevor Bromley and Colin Irvine, who disposed of another highly rated side A Delaporte and Danny Slavich 16/9.

When the third round continues next Monday we will see some really good games, Jim McKenzie/Glynn Vaughan playing B.Parmenter, and Ted Alden and it should be a corker. Hard to select a winner especially in a pairs game

Can the big upsetters in the first roundTrevor Bromley and Colin Irvine go on with the job in their game?

I guess this is one of the reasons why pairs (2x2x2x2) is liked by so many players who can throw the shackles of playing lead and second in pennants away and have a real game where they are involved in the action all the time.
