State Triples

The Doubleview team

The State Triples was discontinued in 1990. The winners of that event were Dennis Katuna-rich, Robbie Ball and John Rainoldi.
A good move by BowlsWest to bring it back in 2004, and appreciated by the players.

This was a great game to watch and anyones game up until the 20th end.
The Yokine boys got away to a great start and were leading 9/3, with Phil Simonetti playing extremely well with 9 of his first 12 bowls very close to the jack, leaving Jim Bausor with some work to do on his game . George Elkins doing a great job as the middleman, the Kat was feeling his way and Marko playing his usual game. Robbie Ball was nearly always under the pump.

From here on the game started to go better for Doubleview and it became a nip and tuck affair. The feature of the game was clash between George Elkins and the Kat, what was needed was for Jim Bausor to lift his game and he did, the game was still in the balance, Yokine leading 17 / 16 on the 17th end. From here on it was all Doubleview as they went on to score a great victory.

Leads: Some say Jim Bausor won the duel, my stats say he did not, Fabulous Phil won 12 ends. What was important for Doubleview if they were to win this game, was for Jim to lift the work rate and he did.

Middlemen: The highlight of the game with both players working hard to win supremacy. George Elkins was terrific and was a man on a mission, also without the contribution of the Kat Doubleview would have had no chance.

The Skips: Marko appeared to play better than Rob but faded toward the end, he played some terrific conversions, also gave the shot away which was costly, Rob did his best work later in the match when it was really needed.

Best Player: 1. George Elkins, 2. Dennis Katuna-rich.
My summary seems to say Yokine had the better game, however like in football matches, a team can have a lot more of the footy and still lose the game, and this is what the Yokine team did.

Semi-finals: Marko Krajancic defeated Peter Harris {Vic Park}in a very good finish picking up a five on the second last end to win 17 / 15-- Peter Harris hardly played a bad bowl for the entire game and easy to see why he is a State Skipper.

Robbie Ball defeated Trystan Smallacombe { Cambridge} 17 / 11 in the other semi, the Cambridge boys did not play up to the very high standard they displayed the day before. Stll, its a great effort to do as well as they did to make the semi's.
