-----------------------Therese Hastings and John Goddard after the game
--
The Best of the West was held at Osborne Park for the first time and attracted a very good field. Well done to Osborne Park to keep this event going after Morley decided to stop running it. The best of the West has been going since 2005. Full marks to Morley for having initiated the event and doing a great job when they ran it
We have a new champion, Therese Hastings is the first Lady to win this event. We offer her our heartiest congratulations on a great win
Therese is also a member of the victorious Ladies State side that won the Marj Morris trophy in the recently held Australian sides series. It has been a big week indeed for the popular Therese.
To win the title of the Best of the West which brings together of all the winners of the various singles championships thru season 2009-10, Therese beat some mighty fine bowlers. In her section she defeated Kevin Pickering who was last years winner 6-6, 11-7. Then Jim Robertson the Country week singles champ 5-9, 13-4, 5-0 and young Shenayde Heldt 13-5, 16-3.
Winning her section placed her on a collision course with the 2009 Men's singles Champion Brian Axford in the semi-final. Therese duly won this game 11-5, 8-7 often producing a great last bowl. In fact her last bowl against Brian was a ripper to win the game outdrawing brian's closest bowl which was about 9 inches away from the jack
John Goddard defeated Helen Morss 13-6, 6-9, 2-0. Then beat Mark Pasalich who won the Sorrento Master Singles 10-4, 4-11, 4-1 and then followed on to beat Daniel Trewhella 11-1, 15-3.
John then lined up to play Thomas Mitchell in the semi-final winning 0-13, 9-8, 5-0, word from spectators was Thomas thru the game away with wrong shot selection.
A wonderful game by Therese in the final saw her triumph over John Goddard who was last seasons runner up. It mattered not what the situation was for Therese as she drove and drew her way to victory. John Goddard had no answer to the consistency of Therese
who won the 1st set 9-3. Sometimes it was a draw with the last bowl, sometimes it was great draw shots to the jack other times it was a great drive, what ever it was that Therese wanted to do it always did the job
The second set was a little tighter but once again when the chips were down and the $1000.oo first prize was under threat Therese produced a little magic. Always calm in a crisis, Therese weathered every challenge and was a more than worthy winner. Therese drew the second set 6-6 to become the first lady to win the Best Of The West Sets play title
