John "Guts" Goddard became the 3rd player in the history of the Champion of Club Singles Champions to win back to back titles defeating Toodyay Bowler Ashley Grundy in the final.
In a good game to watch and perfect conditions to play bowls in. It was John Goddard who started out sensationally well finding his range almost straight away to lead 13-0.

It seemed that Ashley would have trouble to get onto the scoreboard. Up to this point of the game it did not matter what the situation for John he would always have shot at the completion of the end. After 7 ends had been completed It was John at his near best leading 13-0, but unbelieveably later in the game John would play even better.

Well as always in a game of Bowls you cannot hold a good player down forever. Ashley made it to the final because of his consistent draw and brilliant shot play and playing under huge pressure, at last the scoreboard would show a number on his side of the board.

We were treated to some mighty fine bowling by Ashley who started to make an impression winning the next seven ends going from 13-0 to 13-9. In this part of the game he used all the shots, combined with his draw game to suddenly change the complexion of the game. John Goddard was still playing a lot of good bowls but it did seem that he had lost his concentration for a couple of ends.
John had been playing for six days in Adelaide, then all day in the Best of the West on Friday followed by two days of taking on the best players in the Club Champion of Club Champions so maybe we can make an allowance here.

From here the game took another turn when John Goddard suddenly hit the mark playing his best bowls for the game with an outstanding exhibition of weight control end after end to shut Ashley out of the game. I think Ashley would have been wondering what the hell have I struck here because he had played many bowls that were only 6 inches away from the jack and still find himself two down.
It was vintage Goddard playing in top gear, he drew applause from the spectators on several occasions.
John Goddard a true Champion and no doubt one of the best ever singles players has made history being the 3rd player to win back to back titles and to think he is finished would be folly, he could become the first to win it three times consecutivly.

Ashley Grundy may have lost the final but he won over the spectators during the series and in the final because he went all the way in his endeavours to win this game. Well done to Ashley who has been playing for 25 years winning club singles on 8 occasions.

The marker for this game was James Jaworski and I must compliment him on his excellent display of quick and precise marking
